The Mortgage Crisis: Can Homeowners and Lenders Recover from the Housing Market Meltdown?
Thursday, December 4, 2008
(breakfast/networking – 7:15 A.M.; program – 7:45 A.M.)
Tower Club (28th Floor – One Financial Plaza)

Banks are closing, foreclosures are up, and mortgage companies are going out of business. Even as politicians and housing experts outline recovery plans, the U.S. mortgage crisis appears only to be deepening. Third-quarter foreclosure filings are up 71 percent over the same period last year and job losses, economic downturn, and borrowers unable to keep paying mortgages that now exceed the value of their homes could trigger more foreclosures.

As talk of mortgage buyouts and loan modification programs intensify, the question remains: Who has a workable plan to get America’s housing market back on track and who should foot the bill for the massive subprime fallout that fueled the crisis? Two top real estate and housing experts will put their best ideas forward in a Tower Forum debate moderated by Regent Bank Chairman and CEO Sid Spiro.

Speakers:

Bradley F. Hunter, National Director of Consulting, Metrostudy, has over 23 years experience in real estate analysis and local market economics. As director of the nation’s leading provider of market information for the housing industry, he has spearheaded hundreds of site- and area-specific studies.

Richard Barkett, CEO, REALTOR Association of Greater Fort Lauderdale, oversees one of the nation’s largest real estate associations with a South Florida membership of close to 12,000. A licensed Florida real estate broker since 1975, he serves on the board of the Broward Housing Partnership.
